The Commandant - General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps , Muhammadu Gana, has condemned the killing of the Action Alliance Imo senatorial district candidate , Mr Ndubuisi Emenike , by an NSCDC operative.
He revealed that the suspect had been arrested and handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution .
The erring operative who was the security aide to Emenike reportedly shot the politician dead while firing in the air during a party to celebrate the electoral victory of an All Progressives Congress candidate during Saturday ’ s rerun election in Imo State .
But speaking while briefing the Corps management at the NSCDC national headquarters, Abuja , the CG described the killing of the politician as unfortunate .
He also condoled with the family of the deceased as well as the people of Imo State and Nigeria in general .
The Corps spokesman, DCO Emmanuel Okeh, in a statement in Abuja on Monday , said the CG had directed the ACG in charge of zone E , Owerri and the Commandant of Imo State Command to carry out a full- scale investigation into the incident and ensure that the suspect was prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others .
It said, “ The CG berated the operative involved in the dastardly act for such a costly mistake and wanton carelessness that resulted in the death of a prominent politician and an illustrious son of Imo State . ”
Gana charged all state commandants to read the rules of engagement to all armed personnel in their commands and ensure periodic screening to keep them in check.
He assured Nigerians that the Corps would continue to live above board , reiterating that the recent psychological profiling of officers and men carried out across the state commands was geared towards flushing out any individual with questionable character or unstable personality , especially in the armed squad.
