A socio-political group in Imo State that goes with the name Imo Equity Movement has accused the Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha of being behind the abduction of their Secretary, Bar (Hon) Kingsley Ononuju for obvious political reasons.

The group in a press statement signed by their
Director Media and Strategy, Tobechi Chigbu on 1st July, 2017 captioned  "ABDUCTION OF SECRETARY OF IMO EQUITY MOVEMENT HON BAR. KINGSLEY ONONUJU BY UNKNOWN GUNMEN alleged that the sensitization of the masses about the merit of ensuring that the next Imo Governor in 2019 should come from Owerri Zone as against the Governor's wish may have being the objective. Stating that since their agitations was declared about 3 months ago, it has been vehemently and viciously opposed by the serving governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

The statement read:

"Hon Bar. Kingsley Ononuju, the secretary of Imo Equity Movement was on Thursday 29th of June 2017 at about 8.00pm kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Owerri. His abductors have since contacted his family members and are asking for Six Million Naira ransom."

The public relations officer of the group said "On Saturday  1st July 2017, Police recovered his vehicle which he was using at the time of his kidnap in Elele, Rivers State from two occupants who at the sight of patrolling Police Officers, abandoned the said vehicle and ran into the bush. The vehicle is now parked at Elele Police Station."

He stated that  In the afternoon on the day of his kidnap, Bar. Kingsley Ononuju and his colleagues stormed Ngor Okpala to flag off the Owerri Zone Townhall Meetings of Imo Equity Movement wherein they sensitized the masses about the merit of ensuring that the next Imo Governor in 2019 should come from Owerri Zone."

Continuing he averred that "This objective since it was declared about 3 months ago, has been vehemently and viciously opposed by the serving governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha. The next Townhall meeting of Imo Equity Movement was billed to hold in Bar. Ononuju’s Mbaitoli Local Government Area on Saturday, 1st July 2019."

Imo Equity Movement declared that "We hereby accuse Gov. Okorocha of being behind the abduction of Hon Bar. Kingsley Ononuju for very obvious reasons and charge him to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of our Secretary since this new wave of intimidation will in our judgment, only heighten the already tense security situation in the State." Tobechi Chigbu noted.
