This is the first time in the history of Nigeria nascent democracy that the recall process, enshrined in the electoral act and upheld by the country's constitution is being tested. The outcome of the recall process being initiated by the registered voters of Kogi West Senatorial District will enrich Nigeria democratic system and constitutionalism.
According to INEC press statement made available to Ifeanyicy.com, the electoral body has acknowledged the receipt of the petition submitted by the Kogi West voters seeking the recall of their Senator, Dino Melaye.
The press statement signed by Mallam Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner & Member, information and Voter Education Committee reads:
"The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, held its regular weekly meeting today and considered the petition submitted by some registered voters in Kogi West Senatorial to Kickstart the process of recalling Senator Dino Melaye.
In accordance with INEC guidelines for the recall of members of the National Assembly, the Commission has formally acknowledged the receipt of the petition to the petitioner's Representatives and has conveyed a letter notifying Senator Melaye of our receipt of the petition.
The next step is to verify that the petitioner's are registered voters in Kogi West Senatorial District.
INEC will, on the 3rd of July, 2017 issue a public notice stating the day(s), time, location and other details for the verification exercise.
