The attention of Imo Equity Movement has been drawn to the very dangerous sand dredging activity going on in Nworie River especially the stretch between the 1st and 2nd Inland Bridges.
Tobechi Chigbu, Director Media and Strategy,
June 8, 2017 made this known to newsmen in Owerri the Imo State capital stating that the dredging for sand business being executed by no less a person than Mrs. Geraldine Obinali – elder sister to Gov. Rochas Okorocha – and her agents constitute both environmental hazard and structural threat to both bridges above mentioned.
He explained further that the menace has continued in spite of contrary directives from appropriate State and National Agencies which have repeatedly prohibited all dredging on the Nworie Stream.
The spokesperson of Imo Equity Movement said "we call on the government to immediately stop Mrs. Geraldine Obinali and her agents from continuing with the dangerous sand dredging and excavation activities which is threatening the safety of Imo citizens.
" Discussion with COREN certified Structural and Marine Engineers revealed that the environmental impact of this sand mining activity so close to the bridges poses a serious threat to the structural integrity of the bridges, serious erosion threat as well as danger to lives and property plying that bridge.
We shall be forced to lead protests to stop these activities if the government fails in her responsibility in this regard"
