Surprisingly, there was a very poor turnout of workers for the Workers' Day Celebration in Imo. Barely few civil servants were in attendance. One would begin to wonder why the State Workers have refused to show up at the event. The Workers in attendance were clamoring for the payment of 30 months arrears which they were being owned.
While addressing the State Workers, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress in the State, Austin Chilakpu, said it is true that the country is experiencing economic recession but wondered why Government officials would decide to rescue themselves from the recession by sacrificing the salaries of workers. He however stated that the sacking and suspension of workers and the cutting of worker's salaries can never be the solution to the hardship in the country.
