A final -year students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, Comrade Collins Ogbonna, a former Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the immediate past Student Union Government (SUG) popularly known as 'Rochas' who was expelled along side five (5) others, also members of the last SUG for allegedly masterminding the February 17 , 2017, protest in the institution, has petitioned the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR.

FUTO students had in February demonstrated against the hike in school fees and the school management ’s alleged exploitation of them .

The protest grounded the school, leading to its closure for about three months . On April 3 , 2017 , the university authorities announced that it had expelled six final - year students .

In the petition dated May 11 , 2017, Ogbonna, who was a final -year student of Fishery and Aquaculture, stated that his expulsion by the school management was an act of
intimidation.

Ogbonna urged the CDHR to probe the increase in tuition and acceptance fees paid by the which he claimed were far above what others students pay in other universities .

The embattled students , who vowed to testify in court with evidence , claimed that the prices of goods and services on the campus had skyrocketed even as he stated that there was a
high level of security risks in the school unlike before .

According to a press release signed by J. U Nnabuihe, Registrar /Secretary of University Senate captioned EXPULSION FROM THE UNIVERSITY reads:

"at its 421st meeting held on Thursday, March 30th, 2017, the senate considered the interim report of the committee investigating the recent violent demonstration by the students of the Federal University of Technology Owerri.

The Senate found you capable for the act of organizing and actively participating in the violent demonstration that took place in the University on February 17, 2017 which resulted in wanton destruction of University property. This action which was carried out in utter disregard of elected Student Union Government and proper channels of communication within the university is tantamount to gross misconduct. Consequently, the senate approved that you be expelled from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, with immediate effect in keeping with the provisions of the regulations and section 17 (i) (d) of the Federal University of Technology, act, cap 39 F 23, Vol Vii laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004."
