The Police Command, Imo state has arrested 15 students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, for allegedly leading the protest which engulfed the university.

The undergraduate students had on Friday,February 16, 2017 protested the proposed increase in their tuition and course registration fees, among others, by the school authority.

The protest was  reported to had turned violent due to the inability of the University management to address the protesting students,  but rather invited the police who were throwing tear gas to disperse the aggrieved undergraduates which saw to some of them taking laws into their hands by destroying some of the school buildings, including the Information and Computer Technology centre, Senate building, Diamond Bank were reportedly attacked by the protesting students
Speaking to news on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, said 15 students were arrested by the operatives of the command for alleged involvement in criminal activities during the protest.

He said, “I can confirm to you that about 15 students have been arrested in connection with attacks and looting of the Senate building, the ICT centre where computers and other information gadgets were stolen, as well as the attack on a bank on the campus.”
