Two young men were yesterday set ablaze in Umuguma in the Owerri West local Government area of Imo State for allegedly stealing a brand new motorcycle from a commercial motorcyclist .
An eyewitness account told our correspondent that the two youths who were in their mid twenties had successfully snatched a brand new motorcycle from a commercial motorcyclist at the ever busy World Bank roundabout, near Owerri, the state capital and were about escaping with the bike before they were intercepted .
Our correspondent was told that luck ran out on the young men as other commercial motorcyclists mobilised and gave the fleeing suspected criminals a hot chase, caught them and set them ablaze with a tyre and fuel before security men could arrive the scene.
The eyewitness disclosed that the enraged commercial motorcyclists were embittered by the action of the suspected motorcycle snatchers who disposed a man of a motorbike entrusted to him newly , an action they said would have put him into trouble with the bike owner.
They were further moved to set the men ablaze, as according to the eyewitness account, snatching of motorcycles and other similar criminal activities had been a recalling decimal in the area, hoping that the jungle justice admitted on the two men would serve as a deterrent to other criminals in the area.
When contacted for comments, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, DSP, said that though he had learnt but the incident as a rumor, but his office was yet to be briefed as of the time of filling in this report.
