 CHIDIEBUBE OKEOMA, OWERRI

The governor of Imo state,  Rochas Okorocha, has announced the immediate cancelation of all the Memoranda Of Understanding entered into by the leaders of the oil producing communities of Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas, respectively with the oil companies operating in their communities .

The governor gave the directive yesterday following complaints by the people of the oil producing communities in the state when he met with the stakeholders from the two oil producing Local Governments in Owerri, the state capital .
The community leaders had during the meeting with the Governor alleged that their communities where being shortchanged by the oil companies operating in their areas, owing to the MOU they entered with them, even as they threatened to take laws into their hands if the government did not wade in immediately.

In order to avert impending problem between the communities and the oil companies operating in their communities ,Okorocha immediately announced the cancelation of all existing MOUs between the oil companies and their host communities.
The Governor announced that a fresh memoranda Of Understanding would be signed between the oil companies and their host communities with the full involvement of the state Government, so as to halt further marginalization of the people.

He regretted that the oil companies doing their businesses in the state had in the past relied on the dubious activities of some leaders in the oil producing communities to deny the communities what is due to them as benefit in developing their communities.

Okorocha said "the oil companies are too insensitive to the problems of the oil producing communities and they have continued to adopt divide and rule tactics in the communities to achieve their selfish aims. The Imo state Government  would no longer fold its hand and watch the oil companies cheat the oil producing communities again".
